Divorce attorney advice on how to pick a divorce attorney

When you face divorce, you face a blizzard of questions about how you will deal with the end of your marriage. How will your kids handle it? How will child custody be decided upon? How will property be divided? And so on.

All are important questions, as is this one: "How do I find a good Peoria family law attorney?" A recent article written by a divorce lawyer gives advice on how to shop for and choose an attorney who will help you through a difficult time.

The Chicago attorney who wrote the article says part of the decision-making process is deciding which legal services you are going to need. If your marriage was a short one and produced no children, and if you and your spouse didn't acquire real estate, the divorce process could well be simple.

But if you have assets that include a house or a business, you will need a divorce lawyer experienced in complex financial splits. And of course, if you have children, you will want to find an attorney who can protect the best interests of your kids while protecting your rights as a parent at the same time.

Another tip the attorney offers: ask your friends and family for their recommendations. They might well know of a good attorney who can help you.

Finally, find an attorney experienced in family law. Some lawyers have a general practice and can help you with a property line dispute, criminal charges, divorce and personal injury all at the same time. But when you must deal with a divorce involving your children or complex property division disputes, you are best served by a law firm focused on the complexities of family law.
