Paying spousal support during a medical crisis

Our blog has addressed some of the reasons why people are no longer able to stay current on their spousal support payment, such as financial difficulties that have resulted from the loss of a job. However, there are other reasons people may find themselves in this position. For example, you may have a hard time paying alimony because of a medical crisis that you are struggling with, especially if it was unexpected and left you little time to prepare financially.

An unexpected medical problem can result in hospital stays and expensive medical bills, which can affect a person's ability to pay spousal support. There are other ways in which a medical crisis can make it tough for someone to pay spousal support as well. For example, someone experiencing health problems may not be able to work or may have to reduce the amount of time they spend at work, which negatively impacts their finances.

If you have experienced significant financial changes, you may be able to modify your spousal support in order to reduce the amount you owe. If you wish to move forward with modification, you should closely go over state laws and you may want to reach out to your former spouse and discuss your situation with them, if possible. We are fully aware of the unique challenges many people are facing when it comes to paying spousal support, but staying current is essential because the consequences of falling behind can be disastrous and make life even harder.
