What can I do about loneliness over the holidays?

As a single father in Illinois, the holidays may be a lonely time for you. It can be hard to adjust to a divorce, especially when you’re separated from your kids for the first time in a long time. In this case, there are steps you can take to deal with loneliness over the holidays while also taking care of yourself.

Don’t deny your feelings

You’re bound to feel sad or depressed over the holidays after a divorce. Instead of denying these feelings, allow them to run their course. If you want to avoid celebrating, that’s perfectly fine, and your friends and family should be understanding about your needs. However, if you find your bad moods are disrupting your life, it might be best to contact a counselor for professional assistance.

Help others

Volunteering at a homeless shelter can be extremely rewarding over the holidays. Not only does it allow you to help those in need, it also helps you gain some perspective on your life. You can also help in other ways. For instance, if you know of a family with little money for the holidays, consider donating some toys or other gifts.

Make new traditions

You can also take this time to try something new. While old traditions may recall painful memories of the past, creating new traditions provides hope for what’s to come. It can be something as simple as trying a new restaurant you’ve always been interested in or singing in a holiday choir. No matter what you ultimately decide, putting yourself out there will help you gain confidence and easy any loneliness you may feel.
