Important things to do during divorce people tend to overlook

There are many things you should do to get ready for a divorce. You need to get your personal finances in order and evaluate your resources so that you end up with an equitable division of the assets you share.

Divorces entail a lot. There is much to contend with during this time, and it is easy to overlook something critical. When you first file for divorce, you want to make sure you take care of a few things immediately. Doing so will make the divorce proceedings so much more manageable.

Change the password on all your accounts

As you prepare for divorce, it would be a good idea to change the passwords for all of your personal accounts, including email and social media. You would not want your spouse to see an email for your attorney when you have not yet served the paperwork. After you file for divorce, you do not want your spouse to continue seeing your correspondences. You have a right to privacy during this time.

Get valuables out of the household

After you serve the paperwork, it may be a while until you or your spouse moves out. Most couples will live separately during the divorce proceedings. For the time being, you should keep any valuables outside of the house. You should keep jewelry and prized possessions at a friend's or family member's house. However, you want to make sure this item is 100% yours. If it belongs to both you and your spouse, then you need to be forward with the judge because you do not want accusations of obstruction.

Change PIN numbers

If your spouse knows your debit card's PIN number, then it would be a good idea to change it at this time. You do not want to risk a vindictive spouse taking money out of your account. You both need to control the money, not just your spouse.
